The Olde Village Square East is a bustling shopping center in JACOBUS BOROUGH. Here, you can fill up your gas tank, pick up groceries, enjoy a pizza, or savor fresh-made baked goods. Nestled right in the heart of the shopping center, between the dog groomers and the pizza shop, is the Village Library.
Inside the library, both children and adults can explore a diverse collection of books, DVDs, CDs, and other materials catering to a wide range of interests. Students have internet access for research, while adults can use our computers for tasks such as checking emails, searching for job opportunities, and utilizing print, copy, and fax services. With your library card, you can also access Libby and Hoopla for e-books, e-audiobooks, music, and movies.
Village Library offers various story times for children, including the ever-popular Summer Quest program for both kids and adults. This program features reading activities, fun events, prizes, and Go York hikes. We have three book discussion groups: Village Readers (morning), Book Club Besties (afternoon), and Rowdy Readers (evening, once a month), as well as a friendly knitting group that meets twice a week.
Additionally, we host a monthly Women's Wellness group and a Teen Tech Support drop-in session for device help and technology questions. Our fundraising activities include a continuous indoor book sale and two large book sales coinciding with JACOBUS BOROUGH'S "Fourth of July BLAST" celebration and "Christmastime in Loganville."
For more detailed information on our current activities, please give us a call at (717) 428-1034 or visit our website, Facebook, or Instagram.
History
The Village Library originally began as the Springfield Township Mini Library, which opened on December 13, 1980, in a renovated bread truck parked on the property of Godfrey Bros. Meats. Charter member Barb Larson fondly recalls, "I sat behind the steering wheel and checked out books." Pre-school story time took place at a nearby church.
As the library quickly outgrew the bread truck, it moved into a small storefront in the Olde Village Shopping Center West and was renamed the Springfield Township Area Library. In 1988, the library relocated across the street to its current location, initially occupying a double storefront, and became known as the Village Library.
At that time, the library comprised two rooms—one for adults and one for children. In 2004, the children's room was expanded into a third storefront, which included the addition of a small kitchen. Subsequently, a fourth storefront was incorporated, providing additional space for the adult collection, a used book sale area, and a designated room for adult programs. This expansion was driven by the dedicated efforts of the Friends of the Library, a group that supports the library through various fundraising initiatives.
