Agency Description
The York County Regional Police Department is a Pennsylvania-accredited, full-service law enforcement agency consisting of 82 officers. They serve a suburban area of over 53,000 residents in York Township, Windsor Township, and the Boroughs of Dallastown, Windsor, JACOBUS BOROUGH, Yoe, and Felton on a contract basis. The community has experienced rapid growth, and the police department is expected to continue expanding, noting the new merger with Spring Garden Township's police department.
The Police Department enforces all the laws of the Commonwealth with a patrol force directed by five sergeants. They use Vascar and electronic speed devices for speed enforcement and employ various methods to enforce traffic laws. The department regularly participates in Sobriety Checkpoints with the York County Center for Highway Safety programs and frequently arrests impaired drivers. Officers also participate in awareness and enforcement programs such as Buckle Up PA and Smooth Operator. They provide child safety seat usage and installation assistance and contribute input for the design of new roads and intersections.
The department has numerous officers trained in advanced accident investigation methods who receive regularly updated training in traffic enforcement methods and laws. Officers also participate in bicycle and driver safety programs at various schools and are represented at the Governor's Highway Safety Program. YCRPD boasts two officers assigned to the K-9 Unit, equipped with a general-duty and drug-detection canine.
Four officers act as School Resource Officers in Red Lion Schools, Dallastown Schools, and the York County School of Technology. The department has implemented the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in conjunction with the Dallastown Area School District, serving over 450 schoolchildren with a curriculum presented by three officers.
Additionally, the department has a four-member investigative unit led by a sergeant that handles a full range of investigative activities. The unit is supported by four patrol sergeants and four administrative clerks. Known for their proficiency in evidence processing and handling complicated investigations, the investigative unit gathers intelligence information. They are often consulted by neighboring departments for assistance and training in handling cases.
